Hope Ranch Garden Estate

A series of garden paths and subtle grading changes reconnect the house to its landscape, creating a more fluid and inviting sequence from the residence to the pool and surrounding gardens.

Movement through the site feels natural and continuous, with spaces unfolding through gentle transitions rather than defined thresholds. The landscape balances structure with a relaxed character, allowing the garden to feel open, intuitive, and connected to the existing home.

Design Approach

The landscape builds upon an existing framework, refining circulation and strengthening spatial relationships across the site. Openings are introduced within existing walls to establish a direct connection from the kitchen to the pool, while stepped retaining walls resolve grade changes and create a more integrated sequence of movement.

Circulation is organized through a network of serpentine pea gravel paths that guide movement between primary garden spaces, including a citrus grove. These paths are designed to feel informal and intuitive, encouraging exploration while maintaining clarity of layout.

Planting is approached as refinement rather than replacement. Existing mature trees and established material are retained to provide structure and continuity. New planting is introduced to infill and soften the landscape, creating a layered composition of grasses and flowering perennials that reinforces a relaxed, coastal character.

The result is a landscape that is cohesive and connected, where circulation, grading, and planting work together to enhance the existing residence while maintaining the ease and openness characteristic of Hope Ranch.
