Mid-Century Garden Retreat

This existing mid-century modern residence underwent a complete landscape transformation designed to reinforce the architectural character of the home while creating a stronger relationship between structure, garden, and outdoor living.

A new cast-in-place concrete retaining wall expanded the primary lawn area and established a more cohesive transition into the upper garden spaces beyond. The landscape composition balances structure and softness through the careful placement of sculptural plant forms, restrained material transitions, and layered California-adapted planting palettes.

Succulents, ornamental grasses, and drought-tolerant planting were used to introduce texture, movement, and seasonal variation while maintaining a restrained and architectural composition. Vertical stone fountain elements establish focal points within the garden and reinforce the strong geometric language of the residence.

A sequence of garden rooms unfolds gradually throughout the property, including intimate courtyard spaces, outdoor entertaining terraces, sculptural planting moments, and framed relationships between architecture and landscape.

Material selections were intentionally restrained, allowing planting texture, shadow, light, and spatial sequence to shape the overall experience of the garden. The result is a landscape that feels calm, grounded, and closely integrated with the architecture while maintaining a distinctly Southern California modern character.

Design Approach

The design focuses on reinforcing the architectural character of the home through clean geometries, minimal material transitions, and structured, sculptural planting palettes. Cast-in-place concrete walls, pathways, and stone fountain elements guide movement and define spaces, establishing a balanced sequence of garden rooms throughout the property.

Planting emphasizes drought-tolerant, climate-adapted palettes, including succulents and ornamental grasses, layered to soften structural edges while maintaining year-round form, texture, and visual interest.
