Poinsettia Courtyard House
A compact courtyard landscape where scale is carefully controlled to create a strong spatial impact. The design extends the architecture outward, establishing a seamless relationship between interior and exterior through proportion, alignment, and open sightlines.
Despite its size, the garden is composed to feel expansive. Lawn panels, structured planting, and layered seating create a clear spatial framework, allowing the landscape to read with depth and clarity. The experience is immediate yet resolved, with each element contributing to a cohesive whole.
Color plays a defining role. The planting palette draws from the surrounding coastal environment, with tones of blue and soft orange referencing the ocean and sunset, introducing variation within a restrained composition.
A custom barbecue is integrated as a sculptural element within the courtyard, designed as part of the architecture rather than as an applied feature. It anchors the outdoor living space while maintaining the overall clarity of the design.
Design Approach
The landscape is structured to maximize impact within a limited footprint, using alignment, proportion, and restraint to establish order. Circulation is direct, allowing spaces to connect without excess, while maintaining clear relationships between interior and exterior.
Planting is used selectively to define space and introduce color. A controlled palette, inspired by coastal tones, reinforces the architectural framework while softening edges and transitions.
Built elements are treated as extensions of the architecture. The custom barbecue is designed as a monolithic form, integrated into the layout to provide function without disrupting the visual continuity of the space.
Materials remain minimal, allowing form, light, and planting to define the experience. The result is a landscape that feels precise and composed, where a small garden achieves a strong and lasting impact.
