Narrative

Located in the heart of Malibu, this commercial landscape enhancement project focused on improving the outdoor customer experience through the thoughtful integration of site furnishings, container gardens, and drought tolerant planting. Designed to complement the relaxed coastal character of Malibu, the landscape introduces color, comfort, and human scale throughout the shopping center environment.

The project sought to transform underutilized outdoor areas into welcoming destinations where visitors could gather, relax, and enjoy time outdoors. Through the strategic placement of seating, colorful planters, shade trees, and water-wise planting compositions, the landscape creates a more engaging pedestrian experience while reinforcing the casual lifestyle associated with the Malibu community.

Inspired by the colors of the Pacific Ocean, coastal vegetation, and Malibu sunsets, the design brings warmth and visual interest to the property while creating a cohesive landscape identity that enhances the shopping experience.

Design Approach

The landscape is organized around a series of outdoor gathering areas, pedestrian walkways, and storefront spaces designed to encourage comfort, interaction, and extended use throughout the property. Seating areas are carefully integrated within the landscape to provide opportunities for rest, conversation, and outdoor enjoyment while strengthening the connection between visitors and the surrounding environment.

Large scale containers manufactured by Old Town Fiberglass and Hart Concrete were selected as signature landscape elements throughout the project. Inspired by the vibrant colors found along the Malibu coastline, the containers introduce shades of blue, aqua, and orange that provide visual contrast against the architecture while contributing to a relaxed coastal atmosphere.

Planting compositions emphasize drought tolerant and climate appropriate species selected for their sculptural qualities, texture, and seasonal interest. Succulents, ornamental grasses, flowering perennials, and water-wise shrubs create dynamic arrangements that thrive within the coastal environment while minimizing long term maintenance requirements. Shade trees were incorporated throughout the site to provide comfort, soften hardscape areas, and establish a more inviting pedestrian scale.

Outdoor furnishings were coordinated throughout the property to create a variety of seating experiences ranging from casual gathering spaces to quiet resting areas. Colorful rocking chairs, benches, and integrated seating elements reinforce the welcoming character of the shopping center while encouraging visitors to linger and enjoy the outdoor environment.

The result is a vibrant commercial landscape that combines colorful container gardens, drought tolerant planting, and thoughtfully integrated site amenities to create a distinctly Malibu experience that enhances both the property and the surrounding community.
