Yucaipa Ridge House
Set against the foothills of Yucaipa, this contemporary residential landscape is designed as a seamless extension of the home’s architectural language and surrounding hillside environment. Designed while working with Sammy Castro Design in collaboration with Walker Workshop and Kevin Corn Design, the landscape balances strong geometry, layered outdoor living spaces, and a restrained desert influenced planting palette to create a calm and immersive residential retreat.
Broad terraces, linear circulation paths, and integrated gathering spaces organize the site around openness, framed views, and connection to the surrounding landscape. Water, architectural concrete, wood decking, and layered planting compositions create a landscape that feels grounded, contemporary, and closely tied to the natural character of the property.
Design Approach
The landscape is structured through a series of connected outdoor rooms, elevated terraces, and integrated circulation paths that reinforce the strong horizontal geometry of the residence. Broad stair elements and linear paving compositions establish movement across the site while creating continuity between architecture, pool terraces, and outdoor gathering spaces.
A rectilinear pool and integrated spa anchor the outdoor living environment, creating a reflective central element closely connected to the surrounding terraces and lounge areas. Outdoor seating spaces, dining terraces, and transitional garden areas are carefully positioned to frame views toward the surrounding hills while supporting gathering, relaxation, and year round outdoor living.
Planting is composed through a contemporary, drought tolerant framework of grasses, sculptural shrubs, low water planting, and layered green edges that soften the architectural forms while maintaining openness throughout the property. Material selections emphasize architectural concrete, wood, stone, water, and subtle planting contrasts that reinforce the contemporary residential character of the project.
The result is a modern hillside landscape that integrates architecture, outdoor living, water, and planting into a cohesive residential environment rooted in the natural character of Yucaipa and the surrounding Southern California landscape.
